In the world of law enforcement, every day comes with its set of trials and tribulations. During my ten-year tenure, I witnessed the pendulum of public opinion swing wildly, often fueled by media narratives that stray far from the truth. The recent case of Leonard Cure in Georgia is a glaring example of how twisted narratives can perpetuate misconceptions and ignite unwarranted animosity towards the law enforcement community.
Unmasking the Narrative
Leonard Cure’s case spiraled into the public eye with a narrative that was as tragic as it was misleading. The media was quick to paint a picture of a wrongfully convicted man, recently exonerated, meeting his end at the hands of law enforcement. However, the devil is in the details, and as the dashcam and bodycam footage revealed, the reality of the encounter was far more nuanced.
Compliance vs. Resistance
A critical point of divergence in media narratives revolved around Leonard Cure’s compliance or resistance during the traffic stop. While some outlets suggested an initial compliance on Cure’s part1, the police footage painted a different picture, showing a physical altercation between Cure and the officer right from the outset2. This discrepancy feeds into an ongoing narrative that often seeks to vilify law enforcement without delving into the complex dynamics of such encounters.
Contextual Bias
The emphasis on Cure’s wrongful conviction in some media portrayals, while emotionally evocative, sidesteps the actions leading to the tragic outcome on that fateful day3. It’s essential to separate past injustices from the actions and decisions made during the encounter, a nuance often lost in the race to craft a compelling narrative. Leonard Cure passed and officer at over 100mph, and arrestable offense in Georgia for speeding and reckless driving. Leonard was immediately non-compliant, and began assaulting the officer by punching him and holding him by the throat. He overpowered the officer, and when an officer is overpowered by physical force on the side of the road, it becomes a deadly threat. Leonard, and Leonard alone, forced the officer to use deadly force. The fact that he was released from prison and exonerated on previous charges has absolutely no bearing on the actions that he chose to take towards the officer.
The Race Factor
The racial undertones highlighted in some media outlets further exacerbated the divisive narrative, even before the facts of the case were fully unveiled4. As someone who has served in the line of duty, I can attest to the fact that such divisive narratives do a disservice to the community and law enforcement alike, muddying the waters and obscuring the path to justice and understanding.

The Leonard Cure case is a stark reminder of the power of narrative and the imperative for truth in fostering a constructive dialogue between the community and law enforcement.
